The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) will host a press conference to officially kick off Hispanic Heritage Month featuring its 2016 Medallion of Excellence Honorees Cheech Marin, Anna Maria Chávez, and Arnoldo Avalos, prior to its 39th Annual Awards Gala, on September 15, 2016 at Washington Court Hotel. Awards Gala celebrity emcee J.W. Cortes will also participate in the event.

CHCI’s Hispanic Heritage Month events present an opportunity each year to celebrate achievements in the Latino community and the accomplishments of those who have contributed to our society and culture through their commitment to excellence and community service.

Cheech Marin, Actor, Comedian, Producer
For being an outstanding role model in the Latino community and for his numerous philanthropic achievements, Cheech Marin is awarded the 2016 CHCI Medallion of Excellence in the Arts, Entertainment, Music or Sports.


Anna Maria Chávez, First Latina CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA
For her tireless efforts as a public servant and her commitment to being a leader in the Latino community, Anna Maria Chávez is awarded the 2016 CHCI American Dream Medallion of Excellence in Education, Science, Medicine or Civil Rights.


Arnoldo Avalos, Founder of the Avalos Foundation
Since its inception, the Avalos Foundation has focused on providing scholarships to low-income high school students who are attending the University of California system. Most of its scholars have a family income less than $50K and are of a variety of ethnic backgrounds, representing small communities in the region. For his significant contributions to the CHCI-AA and the Latino community, Arnoldo Avalos is awarded the 2016 Medallion of Excellence for a Distinguished Alumnus.
